At the scene
- Everyone okay? Call 911 if unsure
- Move to safety; hazards on
- Photos: all corners, damage close-ups, wide scene, plates
- Exchange: name, phone, license, insurer, policy #
- Witness contacts
- Police report number, if officers respond
Within 48 hours
- Notify your insurer
- California SR-1 to DMV within 10 days if injury or damage over the state threshold
- Start the estimate with photos
- Vehicle not drivable? Arrange the tow before storage fees stack up
During the repair
- Keep your claim number handy
- Ask for the repair plan in writing
- Expect supplements if disassembly finds more — it's normal
- Ask questions any time; it's your car and your claim
